China news: Vladimir Putin and Xi set for ‘extremely worrying’ crunch talks on war | World | News

Harry Kazianis described the threat from China as “the biggest national security threat” faced by the West, saying that Xi Jinping is looking for “lots of different asymmetric ways to push back against the United States”. The war strategy expert told Express.co.uk that China is sensing “weakness” from the United States when it comes to their commitment to defend Taiwan, saying that Beijing is looking to “test” the Biden administration.

Mr Kazianis also said China may attempt to collaborate with Vladimir Putin in order to put pressure on US weapons supplies.

He explained: “I think this is all going to be interconnected very shortly.

“For the Chinese, they looking for lots of different asymmetric ways to push back against the United States and make them look bad.

“So I think what Xi is probably doing, is talking to Putin and saying look, we weren’t very supportive of giving you weapons before but the situation has changed.

“It wouldn’t even take a lot – a couple of hundred drones on the battlefield in Ukraine that are modern and state of the art from the Chinese would make a huge amount of difference for Russia.

“It would put pressure on the US to give more weapons to Ukraine – and the US is really pulling out those HIMARS and they’re pulling them out of US stock, so it’s literally weakening [their] capability to fight China.

“So the whole thing is scary.”

He described the situation as “extremely worrying”, adding: “I think that the West has rightly been worried about Russia and Ukraine, but I think the challenge has always been the rise of China.

Speaking about China’s military response to Ms Pelosi’s visit, Mr Kazianis told Express.co.uk: “I think the Chinese sense a little bit of weakness there, with Biden trying to wade off Nancy Pelosi from going.

“Then he sort of haphazardly supports the visit.

“I think in the short term the Chinese are going to test what the Biden administration is going to do.”

Ahead of Ms Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, Mr Biden said the trip was “not a good idea right now”.

After the House Speaker arrived in Taiwan, the People’s Liberation Army sent more than 200 military aircraft and more than 50 warships toward the island, according to Taiwan’s Defense Ministry.

Meanwhile, dozens of Chinese military planes crossed the median line in the Taiwan Strait, the unofficial sea border between Taiwan and China.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said last week that the exercises were aimed at “sending a warning” to those seeking Taiwan’s independence.
