Russia rocked by another explosion as thick black smoke rises above Crimea | World | News

Video footage has been shared by passing motorists on a nearby road of the blaze in the Bakhchisarai district of southern Crimea. It appears to show huge plumes of dark smoke coming from a group of buildings in the distance. Several people have taken to Twitter to reports and footage of the explosion. “Conflict Watch PSF” (@AmRaadPSF) wrote: Reportedly a Ukrainian attack on a #Russian installation in Bakhchisarai district in southern Crimea.”

Twitter user “LX #NAFO” (@LXSummer1) also shared a video of the thick clouds of dark smoke rising high into the sky.

They wrote: “Something is on fire in the Bakhchisarai district, Crimea. Unknown what it is.”

The latest explosion in Crimea came just hours after a Russian attack killed 25 civilians when missiles crashed into a railway station and a residential area in eastern Ukraine.

The Vyshgorod region, directly north of Kyiv, also came under rocked attack but no casualties have been reported, regional official Olexiy Kuleba said on the Telegram channel.

During recent days, there have been missile strikes and artillery shelling of frontline towns, such as Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Nikopol and Dnipro.

Thius has followed warnings from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about the risk of “repugnant Russian provocations” ahead of Wednesday’s 31st anniversary of independence from Moscow-dominated Soviet rule.

During recent days, a number of explosions have rocked Crimea, the peninsula which Russia invaded and subsequently annexed from Ukraine in February 2014.

On Tuesday morning, an ammunition dump near Dzhankoi exploded, in an attack believed to be carried out by Ukrainian special forces.

The MoD added that “Russian commanders will highly likely be increasingly concerned with the apparent deterioration in security across Crimea, which functions as rear base area for the occupation”.

This had followed a reported airstrike on the Saki airbase to the west of Crimea earlier this month, which “almost certainly” led to the detonation of four munition storage units, as well as the destruction of eight fighter jets.

The base is used by the Russian naval fleet in the Black Sea for its aircraft, and the MoD warned its aviation capability would be “significantly degraded” as a result of the strikes.
