The 59-year-old politician served as mayor of Yekaterinburg, Russia’s fourth-largest city, from 2013 to 2018.

Sverdlovsk regional Governor Yevgeny Kuyvashev released a message of support for Mr Roizman, asking that he be treated with “fairness and respect.”

More than 224 Russians are facing jail time for calling the conflict a “war” or “invasion”, according to human rights group OVD-Info.

Meanwhile, 16,437 Russians have so far been detained for protesting against the war, OVD-Info said.
