The paper said the changes would mean Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission President, would see a pay lift of €2,015 (£1,768).

Meanwhile, an EU Commissioner’s salary would rise by €1,643 (£1,442) and MEPs’ salaries would go up by anywhere between €632-€9,800 (£555-£8,601).

On average, an EU official would be between €210-€1,460 (£184-£1,281) better off per month, it said, depending on the pay grade.

These changes would also be applied retroactively, to cover the period from July 1.
